The Book of Deacon is the first book of The Book of Deacon series by Joseph R. Lallo.
Myranda Celeste’s world has been built on a legacy of bloodshed. For more than a century, her homeland the Northern Alliance has fought the Kingdom of Tressor in what has come to be known as the Perpetual War. While her people look upon the conflict with reverence, Myranda’s hate for the war has made her an outcast.
When she finds a precious sword among the equipment of a fallen warrior, she believes her luck may have changed. Little does she imagine that the treasure will draw her into an adventure of wizards and warriors, soldiers and rebels, and beasts both noble and monstrous. The journey will teach her much about her potential, about the origins of the war, and about the threat her world truly faces.
Will Myranda unlock the secret of bringing peace once and for all, or will the world be lost to the Perpetual War?

I enjoyed this story even though a great deal of it could have been edited out. I was able to glean the complete story even though there were MANY pages that I simply skimmed over because the blathering was tedious. This is a frustrating trend I've seen happen in the last few years. Authors have begun taking stories that could easily be one long good book, and blathering on unnecessarily for pages and pages, so that they can make several books out of it. The problem with that is, your first book needs to be compelling enough to make the reader want to read the next book(s). But when you blather on and on simply to fill pages, you are likely to lose the reader. If I come across the next book in this story for free, I'll read it. But I will certainly not seek it out. So, if you don't mind tedious over explanations and don't mind that there will be no conclusion to this story in this book, go for it. For me, it was just not compelling enough to want to seek out the next book in the story.Product details

The Book of Deacon The Book of Deacon Series 1 eBook Joseph Lallo Reviews
Started out good and promising. Until it got to the wizard's tower and suddenly wow she has an aptitude for magic. Great, nice surprise, ok good.
Then she gets to the wizard village and suddenly she's some divine prodigy that all the element masters/teachers are all fighting for, and she's mastering everything in half a year what (as other characters say), should have taken much much longer (15 years?).
Yeah, Mary Sue. Greatly disappointed as the first half of the book was wonderful. Plot/premise is something fresh, old ideas given a new twist etc etc.
But nope. It's like the author got tired half way through and just wanted to speed things up and so resorted to just making her a Mary Sue. Everyone wants her, she's a prodigy, she's amazing.
She's boring.
I'm not going to give a rehash of the plot in this review. There are enough reviewers who have done that. Instead, I will explain, to the best of my ability, why I gave this book five stars.
I don't usually care for fantasy as much as I do hard science fiction. However, the world that the author has created is so captivating and fully formed that I became totally immersed within the first few pages. This is well and truly a fantasy book, and this first installment was so good that I went ahead and purchased the entire series on the assumption that the rest of the series would be this engrossing.
I found the characters to be complete, detailed, and believable. I cared about them, even those on opposing sides of the war that is consuming the world in which the story takes place. The action pulled me forward through the story and so fully involved me that many times I found that my whole body was tensed during the periods of tension within the story.
It is a world populated by wizards and witches, dragons and mermaids, and all manner of mythical beasties. All of which are 100% fully formed characters down to the last hair and scale.
This was a totally captivating and breathtaking read and I hated reaching its last page. It's a good thing there are more books in the series to enjoy.
(P.S. In that I'm also an author and editor, I truly appreciate the attention that was paid to the proofreading of this book. There were surprisingly few errors. The few I noticed were of the type that cannot be caught by a spellchecker. For example, the word "though“ instead of “through“ wouldn't be caught because it's a correctly spelled word, it's just the wrong word. Thank you and kudos to the proofreader.)
Joseph Lallo has clearly put a lot of thought and energy into this book. His protagonist, Myranda, is likable and interesting, and the world she inhabits is rich. Her story, though, would have benefitted from some professional editing, both at a high level (the story itself tends to get rambly and bloated) and at a sentence level (I can't remember the last time I saw so much use of the passive voice — "The lamps were lit").
I also found myself rolling my eyes that the protagonist achieved mastery at multiple disciplines in a matter of weeks, including combat training that would realistically take years. I understand that she's a "prodigy," and that her prodigy status is a plot point, but the whole "instant genius" concept is a pet peeve of mine, so this whole theme in the book, and the inordinate amount of time spent on it, grated on me.
Ultimately, it feels like such a shame that the author, who clearly has talent and passion for writing, chose not to pay for a good editor to make his book the best it could be.
I won't be reading the next in the series because I can't stomach the rambly bloat and passive voice, though I'm curious to find out what happens next. I hope Lallo decides to get a good editor, because his writing deserves it!
This book showed up as a free download yesterday. I woke up this morning and figured I would start a few pages of this book over coffee. Seven hours later, I finished the book and bought the 2nd book in the series.
I'm struggling to find the words to describe why I enjoyed the book. It was a book about war, magic, wizards but it was done very differently than other books of that genre. The character development was well done. The good characters had flaws and the bad characters had redeeming qualities. And, most importantly, I never found myself in skimming mode. And, of course, the ultimate positive review of any book is to immediately purchase a 2nd book by that author (which I did). If you are a fan of fantasy fiction, you will probably enjoy this book.
I enjoyed this story even though a great deal of it could have been edited out.
